This wasn’t just an image to me; this became an obsession—a bucket list item. I spent a lot of time searching for this beauty until I finally found it. Day in and day out, I thought about this island nonstop. My recent photography trip revolved around it. The island had such a calm, soulful vibe that I was determined not to go home empty-handed. I desperately wanted to experience it with my own eyes.
I asked a local for directions to access the island, and they kindly guided me the right way. I was nervous, anxious, and excited about the opportunity to see it in person, so I decided to hike along the shoreline to reach it. I captured a few images, but I wasn’t satisfied with them. Feeling discouraged, we went back to review the pictures on my laptop, only to find that my memory card had been wiped clean. I felt utterly defeated. Losing what I had already captured, including some images from the day before, made me feel as if someone was out to get me.
Feeling hopeless and with nightfall approaching, I was strongly encouraged to give it another try before my trip ended. Since I didn’t like what I had captured due to the memory card issue, I got up the next morning, only to realize that the morning light hadn’t fully emerged yet. However, I had a unique perspective in mind that was different from the norm, so I decided to go for it. As the pink and purple hues began to emerge, I felt it was completely right to follow my instincts for this capture.
I strongly believe in enjoying the moment, especially in photography, and this was truly a significant moment for me. This was a major bucket list experience that I had to embrace. There is truly unique beauty all along Lake Superior.
I am beyond grateful that things played out the way they did. While I may have lost some files, I gained a very unique perspective on this little island. A part of me is still here, reliving that moment.
