Sinanitsa Wildflowers, Pirin Mountain, Bulgaria

This is another example of one of my favourite types of landscape—one that includes a foreground (usually wildflowers), a lake with a reflection, and a background—a steep mountain peak.

The Sinanish Circus has a specific northwest exposure, which is usually best lit during sunset around the summer solstice. This is also why some of my visits are during this time of year. In addition, the requirement for reflections requires some research into whether the wind speed during this period will be such that the water is flat enough to see the peak in the lake’s waters. The other things that concern the research are the density of cloud cover and the flowering period of the many-leaved willow.

Once the conditions are met, the journey is undertaken. Despite serious research, the processes in the mountains are never the same as they were at this time the previous year, and luck also sometimes plays a huge role. But if a person is in the mountains long enough, sooner or later, the necessary conditions will occur – calm weather, variable cloudiness and flowering, to capture the desired landscape.
