Shiroka Polyana Dam is located in a pine forest in the Western Rhodopes, about 30 km from Batak, 46 km from Peshtera, and 20 km from Dospat. Its altitude is 1500m above sea level. It is surrounded by three protected areas: “Shiroka Polyana” from the north-northwest, “Studena Chuchurka” from the south-southwest, and “Kaval Tepe” from the east.

The dam occupies a former pasture valley and was formed by the construction of 5 separate walls at different ends. The lake is relatively shallow, with an average depth of 6 m. The dam is a centre of sport fishing—there are American and Balkan trout, mullet, perch, carp, catfish, rudd, golden crucian carp, silver crucian carp, grass carp, and others.

The photo was taken on a cold autumn morning when the morning mist blocked the sun and created a huge diffuser that scattered the light.
