An early morning sunrise over Auckland’s most iconic landmark. Rangitoto (translation: “blood-red sky” in the Māori language) is Auckland’s most recent volcanic cone. The beach from which this was taken is less well known in the area and is often peaceful, especially at 7 a.m. in late winter.

I originally skipped over the raw image as it was underexposed. A few months later, I came back to the images and found this gem hiding in the shadows. The purple and blue hues, along with the glistening sand texture in the sky, make for a captivating image. The clouds almost resemble the rumbling of an active volcano.
