One of the most unusual photographic explorations I have ever encountered occurred at the Death Valley National Park. I was surrounded by nature’s palette, an exquisite array of shades of violets, blues, and pinks. They appeared to be painted onto an ‘icy’ canvas, fully textured with sand, moulded into perfect polygons.
Much to my surprise, to the touch, there was no ice—just salt polygons that began underneath the earth as groundwater eased up from beneath and caused these sand deposits. I set up my tripod and waited for the light. It wafted in over the distant hills and enhanced the magnificent colors. Truly, a surreal sight.
