Northern Lights Over Godafoss, Iceland

We planned to stay at the hotel at Godafoss for four nights. It was central to several areas we were interested in, plus it gave us the opportunity to photograph Godafoss under varying light conditions. We arrived on our first day in time to capture some sunset photos at the falls. Nighttime comes pretty early in October, so we returned to the falls after dinner.

The forecast for the Northern Lights (or The Lights, as the locals call them) was strong for the night, so we had high hopes of seeing and photographing them. From our vantage point, we were mostly facing west, so I was unsure if we would see any lights over the falls. We began to see The Lights toward the north and took a few shots there, but we always kept an eye to the west over Godafoss.

Eventually, The Lights started drifting to the west and finally became visible over Godafoss. This was a surreal experience, as it fulfilled one of my biggest goals of our trip: to photograph the Northern Lights over Godafoss. We eventually had to go inside, as my fingers were so cold I could no longer feel the controls of my camera. This was the only night we were there that The Lights were visible.
