This is one of about 1,000 images taken over a couple of hours while watching this bear. It might seem like overkill, but when you’re observing a bear sitting for 20 minutes (which is quite generous), you can’t help but press the shutter button now and then. You want to capture that perfect moment—just in case the magic from the camera improves slightly, or if the Earth’s axis shifts just right, or if you accidentally bump your tripod without realizing it. Plus, with a digital camera, you can!

Every time you press the shutter, your camera can take 20 frames per second. So, really, I only pressed it 50 times! You need that high speed because the bear is always moving, even if only subtly. The ears and eyes never stop! You’re looking for that ideal split second when the bear is clear of obstructions, looking up, with its eyes focused, ears forward, claws visible, and body posture alert. It takes a lot of preparation for just a moment in time, and it’s so worth it!
