One night in September 2025, I consulted my weather app to check the expected conditions for sunrise the next day. Partly cloudy and foggy conditions were the probable forecasts. Using the Photographers Ephemeris App, I found that the “Plage de l’Est” location would be a good vantage point to capture sunrise.
The next day, I installed my tripod and camera 15 minutes before sunrise on the St-Lawrence River shoreline. I composed my image to incorporate the shoreline and landscape, with the left side almost fog-free and the foggy scene on the opposite side.
I installed my 6-stop ND filter on my camera. I performed a 54-second exposure to smooth any wind ripples on the water surface. I envisioned a long exposure to decrease texture on the water surface while increasing reflections and augmenting the impact of the clouds and fog. As always, I used my Live time feature on my camera to perform a perfect histogram (ETTR).
For me, it is important to have favorite photo sites not far from home. I live in a big city, and fortunately, I can drive to this location in under 20 minutes.
