This little lake in the White Mountains of New Hampshire is susceptible to fog, especially in autumn when the warmer morning air flows over the cooler lake water. The White Mountains are a mountain range covering about a quarter of the state of New Hampshire and a small portion of western Maine in the United States. The region is world-renowned for its stunning annual display of fall foliage, and this small lake usually adds a fine color display of its own.

I was here at dawn in early October with a small group of friends. As the sun neared the horizon, the warming air created a foggy scene over the calm lake. We had come to photograph a tiny white church on the opposite side of the lake but quickly shifted our focus as the scene evolved.

The fog made for a serene landscape that captured a tranquil lake scene at sunrise. A small sailboat, its mast a stark contrast, sat motionless on the water’s surface, its reflection perfectly mirrored below. The lake was shrouded in a thick, ethereal fog that obscured the far shore, where a hill and line of trees were barely visible. Sunlight filtered through the mist, creating dramatic rays of light that illuminate the scene with a warm, golden glow on the left side of the image. The right side of the image transitioned to a cooler, blue hue, reflecting the early morning light.

The overall effect was one of peace, stillness, and the quiet beauty of nature. The fog softened the details, creating a dreamlike quality and emphasizing the solitude of the sailboat on the water. It was a beautiful autumn morn in New England.
