A short drive from my home in Atherton, Far North Queensland, lies the quaint little village of Millaa Millaa tucked into the foothills of the Great Dividing Range and in the shadows of Mt Bartle Frere, the tallest mountain in Queensland. With an annual rainfall of around 3.5m (up to double that in a wet year), it is considered the wettest place in Australia and one of the wettest in the world.
Not surprisingly, apart from dairy cattle, the biggest attraction to the area is the many waterfalls which cascade through the rainforest down the mountain sides. Within a 20km radius of town, you can visit a half dozen or more of the prettiest falls you’ll see anywhere in the world.
The biggest difficulty in getting a good image is the fact that it is always so popular with tourists from all over the world. You really need to have the patience of Job or try to time your visit before or after the hordes have descended. Living so close makes it a little easier for me, but I did have to make several visits to get an image I was really happy with.
It doesn’t really matter what time of year you visit, as all of the falls maintain a fairly good flow even during the dry season. Access to a couple of them can be a little tricky after a heavy rainfall event.
