The early spring season was making its appearance along the North Shore of Minnesota, and during this time, the waterfalls were raging. I decided to hunt for some waterfalls during that weekend, and Gooseberry Falls was ideal for the right lighting. The middle falls are what you see here, and it’s the most popular of all the waterfalls here. I wanted to capture it in a unique way, but it was a bit of a struggle at first.
The lighting wasn’t pleasant at first, but I decided to wait it out a bit and allow many tourists to take their photos and videos of these falls. As I was waiting, the lighting changed drastically. The lighting lit up some nearby trees, and I knew this was the right opportunity to highlight this scene. I decided to use my Lee Big Stopper for a slow shutter effect. There was some trial and error with getting the correct exposure for a well-balanced capture, but I managed to get that all dialled in.
The evening light gave this scenery a somewhat painterly look, which I was very pleased with the end result. The nearby trees are also very unique, which I found appealing. I also met another photographer here while capturing this image. He was new to the area, so I guided him to some of the photogenic areas that he would appreciate as well.
Sometimes, waiting out a scene, even for the light to change, can really make an image pop out more. This definitely did not disappoint.
