Maiden’s Tower, also known as Kız Kulesi (meaning Maiden’s Tower in Turkish), is located in Üsküdar. The monument is emblematic of Istanbul: Maiden’s Tower appears on postcards, photographs, souvenirs, and in the city’s collective imagination. It continues to inspire countless artists.
Over the centuries, the tower has served various purposes, including as a signal station, a prison, and even a watchtower during the Ottoman Empire. Today, it is a major tourist attraction, offering breathtaking views of the Bosphorus and the Istanbul skyline. Guided tours allow visitors to discover the rich history of this landmark and enjoy a romantic setting for dinner at the tower’s restaurant.
I took this photo a few weeks ago during a trip to Istanbul, from the Asian side of the city. I already knew the city and this particular spot, from which you can see the lighthouse at the entrance to the Bosphorus, the most famous monuments like the Blue Mosque and Hagia Sophia, and many other mosques, each more beautiful than the last. My last trip here was over 20 years ago, but I had it in mind to come back and take this photo at a time of year when I could add the sunset to my composition.
