We’d left my brother’s place in Kanab days ago, fresh off a fantastic visit. The plan was flawless: a leisurely, photogenic sweep through Capitol Reef and then a restful, non-dramatic stay in Hanksville. Hanksville itself was… an experience. It felt like we’d accidentally time-travelled into a 1950s atomic-bunker diorama.

The real target, however, was Little Egypt. We’d arrived the afternoon before, but the light was a harsh, unforgiving blast that bleached every detail. “No, this won’t do,” I had muttered, holding my camera like a delicate talisman. “We need the golden light.”

Susanna, my wife. had nodded, knowing this phrase was non-negotiable. “Fine. Back to ‘Atomic City’ we go. But we’re getting the early shift.”

Which is why we were now, at 4:00 AM, driving a gravel road that Google Maps insisted was a ‘major artery,’ but that I was increasingly certain was a dry creek bed.

Suddenly, there it was. In the pre-dawn glow, the desert was silent, save for the distinct, rhythmic click of Susanna opening a granola bar. I killed the engine. The stillness was magical. We grabbed the gear—my tripod, her snack cache—and stumbled into the cool, red darkness.

As the sun topped the canyon wall, the transformation was instant. The light didn’t just illuminate; it washed over the landscape like molten honey. The hoodoos, which had looked dusty and grey the day before, lit up with a vibrancy that was almost obscene. That massive, central mushroom hoodoo, with its creamy-white, striped band, looked exactly like a petrified piece of red velvet cake. Beside it, the large, solitary sphere looked like the baker had just dropped a bowling ball.

I worked quickly, the light changing by the second. Tripod down. Focus checked. I captured the layers: the textured foreground, the central, iconic hoodoo cluster, and the towering mesa wall behind. The contrast of the cool blue dawn shadows and the searing orange sun was breathtaking.
