The island of Hawaii, aka the Big Island, is very young in geologic terms, only about one million years old. The coastline has many areas of lava interspersed with sand. Near the town of Kailua-Kona, lava extrusions from previous eruptions have formed sinkholes on the ocean’s edge.
Seawater from incoming waves fills up the opening and then empties out through the bottom. On this evening, vog from the Kilauea volcano created hazy conditions at sunset. I positioned the camera and set an exposure slow enough to blur out the water as it emptied through the bottom of the sinkholes. After several attempts, I captured one frame that I liked.
