In June 2025, I spent three wonderful weeks with friends in Newfoundland, capturing its natural beauty, including whales, birds, icebergs, and stunning landscapes.
As mentioned in previous posts, I like to plan my shots using the Photographer’s Ephemeris application and weather forecasts. This image is an exception!
The first morning in Ferryland, I got up early and saw the early morning light through the windows. I took my camera and went onto the front balcony. All the elements in the scenery amazed me, but there were no whales or icebergs!
I repositioned the chairs to have the sun hit their backs. Then, handheld, I composed and framed the scene using a 16 mm focal length on my Leica DG lens. I know this lens produces pleasing star effects when used at a very small aperture, in this case f/22.
To ensure I captured the full dynamic range of the scene, I programmed the camera to take three exposures with a two-stop increment, allowing me to merge them later into an HDR image in Lightroom.
This trip was my third to this gorgeous province. Looking at this inviting scenery, I hope and dream of returning.
