Haifoss Under the Rain, Bjorsardalur Valley, Iceland

I spent two weeks in Iceland to see the 2025 Summer solstice and the golden hours that last extraordinarily long. However, it has been raining most of the time, and the clouds have covered the sky for the past two weeks. I saw the sun only a few times, for a few minutes, through clouds. Nevertheless, this allowed me to take more dramatic photos, often under the rain and dark clouds.

I used exposure bracketing when the contrast between the sky and the landscape was too strong. For this photograph, it was not necessary.

This particular scene represents very well the ambiance of my photo trip to Iceland. Water carving its way through thick, mossy lava layers at the top of this plateau, flows into Haifoss Falls, formed through layers of tephra (a mixture of magma, volcanic rock, and dust).

It’s Iceland’s third-highest waterfall at 128 meters. A spectacular sight, even in the rain, that I wanted to highlight using a composition where the viewer’s eye follows the flow of the water.
