In October 2024, I spent a wonderful week in the Charlevoix region with friends, all eager to capture the autumn beauty with our cameras. One morning, I was amazed to see a thick layer of fog that resembled a massive low cloud resting on the ground.
From my experience, I found that being at a higher altitude offers the best perspective of the scenery when fog is present. I drove along a small road to get atop a hill. Suddenly, before ascending the hill, I saw a lovely golden field, almost free of fog, near the road, with multiple golden lines heading to a massive wall of fog that hid some hills. I parked my car on the side and walked a few meters to take in the view. I was captivated by the golden rows.
I took out my camera and, holding it steady, composed and framed my shot using a 32 mm focal length and an aperture of f/16. To achieve perfect exposure through “expose to the right” (ETTR), I intentionally overexposed the scene by 2.0 stops.
Looking at the scene, I realized that the fog was concealing nature’s beauty. If it looked so stunning from here, I could only imagine how breathtaking it would be behind the distant wall. It was a clear invitation to explore the area further.
Behind the camera, I was amazed by the scene: several layers of forms, colors, and textures leading up to the fog wall.
Throughout that week in the fog, I captured some truly stunning shots!
