I live just over a two-hour drive from the park, and the Sunrise visitor area, in particular, is a popular evening hangout for me during the summer months. Typically, Sunrise is open from late June to early October most years. On this particular evening, I took a short hike from the visitor center up to Sourdough Ridge to enjoy the sunset colors in the northwest part of the park.

On my way back down to the parking lot after sunset, I noticed that the sky to the east had come alive with beautiful shades of pink, magenta, and blue. Low-lying wisps of cloud drifted down the White River valley, which lies between Sunrise and the peaks of the Cowlitz Chimneys, adding to the stunning view.
