Double Rainbow, Hefei, Anhui Province, China

Based on my experience, the dusk after a summer storm is often marked by a beautiful twilight. But one of the disadvantages of living downtown is that it’s hard to see the whole sky because of the tall buildings. So I took out my DJI Air 3s, which allows me to get to a higher vantage point to avoid them, and went looking for opportunities to capture the scene.

Just before sunset, the sky began to display magnificent colours and clouds in the west, just as I’d hoped. I launched my drone and aimed it in that direction to take several pictures. A girl passing by said to her father, “Look, Dad, a rainbow.” I turned around and saw a rainbow appear in the sky between the buildings. I immediately turned my drone around and found it on my controller screen—actually, them. It was a double rainbow!

I had never seen one before, and what really stunned me was that I could see the entire arc in the sky. But the drone’s wide-angle lens wasn’t wide enough to capture both rings of the rainbow in a single shot, so I took multiple images to stitch into a panorama. It faded so quickly that after a second round of shooting panoramas, it began to disappear.
