I had an urge to get outside and capture the beauty of winter, but I didn’t have a place in mind for what to capture. I decided to drive out to Brighton Beach and hope for the best. The morning light was beginning to rise, and the predawn colors were just incredible. I hoped to capture the vast colors of deep pinks and purples, but I didn’t make it in time.
As the light faded every second, I walked the shoreline, listening to the calming sounds of Lake Superior and how all ambient sounds were just still. I knew that I had to be patient about what to capture and enjoy this frigid morning. About 45 minutes later, I saw the morning light slowly colliding with the dark skies coming from the west. I decided to walk back to this location to get a proper composition to line up with the light. It truly was something incredible to witness.
The heavens shone their brilliant light against the darkness as if there were some spiritual war going on right in front of my eyes, creating such a stunning backdrop along with the icy shoreline. I decided to take a few images of this scenery. I began to struggle a bit trying to get the right exposure but managed to find the right recipe to capture this beauty.
The calming, raw beauty of this image felt poetic in every way possible.
