Stovepipe Wells is a small town located at the northern edge of the park, just a few miles from the famous Mesquite Flat sand dunes and other places of interest. People usually stay here overnight because it is convenient to reach the dunes in the early hours of the morning to catch the first light.
While driving on the road from Stovepipe Wells on our way to the dunes, this sight suddenly caught my eye by the roadside. What struck me was the stark semi-arid landscape, with the haze-covered hills in the valley standing out in the background. The heat in the valley creates the haze that is visible. The bright yellow flowers in the foreground provided a nice contrast to the rest of the vegetation. This goes to show that even a harsh environment like this can support rich flora and fauna.
