The California coastal redwoods are awe-inspiring. Walking through the groves on a sunny day is inspirational. With trees that have been growing in many instances for over 1000 years, and that tower the length of a football field above our heads, it’s natural that we feel their grandeur. And in some ways, it is natural that we short-lived creatures often feel small.

But the groves in the daylight with God rays streaming down don’t come close to telling the whole story. The blue sky, while beautiful and exhilarating, isn’t all there is to experience. The coastal redwoods rely on the closeness of the Pacific Ocean for life-giving water. Much of it comes in the form of seasonal rains, but of equal significance is the fog that floats in from the coast. As much as 40% of the life-giving moisture comes from the fog. Some of the moisture is absorbed by the needles while the rest drops to the ground and is taken up by the roots. And when the fog rolls in, the mood of the forests changes dramatically. What was bold under the sun now becomes calm and peaceful.

I enjoy photographing the redwoods in whatever weather Mother Nature provides. And while much of it is exciting, the fog is special because of its calm and peace. All cares float away, and it is rejuvenating.
