White Sands in Monochrome, New Mexico, USA

White Sands in Monochrome, New Mexico, USA

I arrived late in the afternoon, and the wind was quite strong. I was intrigued by the dust clouds in the distance and the dramatic sky. I thought these, coupled with the rippled sand in the foreground, would make for a dramatic combination.

Beautiful Desolation, Tibet

Beautiful Desolation, Tibet

Another stunning view of the desert with the snow-capped mountain in the background. The driver of the bus we were on would stop now and then so we could stretch our legs. The journey to Mount Kailash and Lake Manasarovar is nearly 1,000 km and takes about two days to cover the distance.

Foggy Sand Dunes, Namib Desert, Namibia

Foggy Sand Dunes, Namib Desert, Namibia

I took this picture during a trip to Namibia, specifically from a helicopter flying early in the morning over the Namib Desert. The trip itself was wonderful, as I could see this vast desert from a different perspective. At some point, the fog started to get denser, playing with the dunes, as illustrated by this […]

Full Tilt, Oatman Road, Old Route 66, Arizona, USA

Full Tilt, Oatman Road, Old Route 66, Arizona, USA

John Steinbeck called Route 66 “the mother road, the road of flight,” and along the stretch between Oatman and Topock, the phrase still resonates with the landscape. Full Tilt was captured during magic hour, when the sun slips behind the Black Mountains and the hardpan exhales the day’s heat. Light saturates the desert—pavement amber, scrub […]

Desolate But Incredibly Beautiful, Tibet

Desolate But Incredibly Beautiful, Tibet

Not sure exactly where this photo was taken on the road. It must have been at a pit stop along the way. We were on our way back from Mount Kailash and Lake Manasarovar to a town close to the border of Nepal, more than 1,000 km away. Tibet, often called the Roof of the […]

Nubra Valley, Ladakh, India

Nubra Valley, Ladakh, India

Located in the remote part of Ladakh, Nubra Valley is at an altitude of over 10,000 feet. The valley is a unique blend of cold desert, sand dunes, and the confluence of the Nubra and Shyok rivers. This is also the home of double-humped Bactrian camels.

Desert Mountain Top, Joshua National Park, California, USA

Desert Mountain Top, Joshua National Park, California, USA

I was visiting Joshua Tree National Park as part of my winter getaway. As I live on Vancouver Island, Canada, I became a snowbird after retirement. I now spend my winters in Arizona and California. It was on one of these trips that I spent the day in Joshua Tree Park. After spending most of […]

Monument Valley Icons, Navajo County, Arizona, USA

Monument Valley Icons, Navajo County, Arizona, USA

Monument Valley in Arizona is not a US National Park, but has the prestigious designation of Navajo Nation Tribal Park, of which there are only a few. I’d like to say it is challenging to see this view of the iconic East and West Mittens with Merrick Butte, but it is the centerpiece of the […]

Wind Shaped Dunes, California Desert, USA

Wind Shaped Dunes, California Desert, USA

One of my favorite places to explore photographically is the badlands and deserts of the American Southwest. I usually spend several weeks exploring there every year in the fall to take advantage of cooler weather and colorful foliage. Travel throughout this entire region is challenging due to its massive size and the long driving distances […]

Dark Color Hills, Pisco, Peru

Dark Color Hills, Pisco, Peru

In August 2018, we travelled to Peru and Bolivia as members of an organised trip. Peru features a 1,555-mile (2,500 km) long, narrow desert strip along its Pacific coast, making up about 10% of the country and acting as one of the driest places on Earth. For that trip, I carried two identical Olympus cameras, […]
