This photo was captured at the perfect end to a perfect day. A friend and I spent a stormy night camping along Kebler Pass. We woke up to storm clouds blowing across the freshly snow-covered peaks. After capturing photos for hours, we took a break for some much-needed sustenance and rest.

Later in the day, we met another friend and ended up capturing more storm clouds and epic fall colors along McClure Pass. Our goal that day was to reach Capitol Peak. We made a few other stops along the way to capture aspen forests, rainbows, old barns, and waterfalls. We arrived at the parking area with time to spare. However, when we arrived, Capitol Peak was covered in clouds.

We packed our gear anyway and headed up the trail, searching for a great spot to capture this amazing scene and hopefully a beautiful sunset with a clear shot of the peak. We walked for over an hour, and the views were getting worse, not better. So, we turned around, finally picking a spot to settle at.

We didn’t have to wait long before the sunset started lighting up the sky with beautiful colors, all the while hoping for a moment with a clear shot. Finally, a break in the clouds gave us a few brief moments of clarity.
