During our week-long stay in the Dolomites, we embarked on daily hikes. One day, we decided to hike one of the trails at Tre Cime di Lavaredo. About three-quarters of the way to our destination, we found ourselves surrounded by fog. The mountains above and the valley below were completely obscured, and for a brief moment, we could barely see the trail. We had previously passed a small chapel on our way out, but it vanished into the fog.

As we made our way back to where our car was parked, the fog began to lift, allowing us to see both the path and the chapel we had walked by earlier. Suddenly, the clouds cleared just enough to let a beam of light shine down and illuminate the chapel.

As a pastor on a month-long sabbatical for rest and renewal, this scene was both humbling and inspiring. It felt almost sacrilegious to pick up my camera, switch to my wide-angle lens, and start capturing the moment. However, I am so glad I did. I named the photo “And Then God Stepped In.” This was one of the most memorable moments of our more than three weeks in Italy.
