Flying over New Zealand’s Southern Alps on the South Island is always a treat and a highlight of my experiences. Although I have flown among these mountains for many years, this was my first opportunity to photograph the braided river that flows into Lake Pukaki.
To capture the desired image, I had to give the pilot specific directions regarding my positioning, which required me to know exactly what I wanted and how the light would impact the scene. This photo was taken shortly after sunrise.
What makes this image particularly popular is the inclusion of our iconic tallest mountain, Mt Cook, alongside the legendary braided river that photographers often chase, complemented by the stunning blues of Lake Pukaki. Composing all three elements in one image creates a captivating combination.
I used a high shutter speed to compensate not only for the movement caused by being in flight but also for the vibrations of the aircraft itself while it was in motion.
Overall, it was a successful trip by all accounts.
