The Sitovo Waterfall is an exceptionally scenic feature, characterized by the unique arrangement of the individual rapids along the river. Hidden within the embrace of the Rhodope Mountains, only thirty kilometers from the city of Plovdiv, the waterfall lies at the meeting point between the villages of Sitovo and Lilkovo. Access to the waterfall is via a relatively flat and easy-to-navigate road. At the fork in the road, one path continues toward Sitovo; the other winds quietly through the forest in the direction of Lilkovo.
Beneath the old stone bridge that marks the turn toward Lilkovo, the river flows gently, forming a graceful cascade of waterfalls. The water descends in two broad falls, together rising no more than four meters, before continuing calmly downstream. Despite their modest height, the falls are notably wide, and the water continues its descent with grace. One of the most striking aspects of the scene is the elegant arch of the bridge rising above the falls like a wreath, providing an elegant and harmonious composition uniting stone and water in a timeless, balanced, and picturesque image.
The surrounding area is enclosed by steep banks, which contribute to the waterfall’s secluded and intimate atmosphere. Fine droplets linger in the air, catching the shifting light and lending the surroundings an almost ethereal freshness; towering pine trees flank the scene, while moss-covered river stones add vibrant green tones that contrast beautifully with the white splashes of water suspended in the air. This combination creates a profound sense of freshness and vitality. The river that feeds the waterfall is known as the Dormushevska River, itself formed by the confluence of two smaller tributaries – the Sitovska and Lilkovska Rivers. These two streams merge at the northern base of Shtudgrad Hill, nourishing the picturesque cascade that is Sitovo Waterfall.
