Hurricane Ian devastated southwest Florida in the fall of 2022. Sanibel Island had a storm surge of 12-15 feet that severely damaged many structures. The historic Sanibel Lighthouse lost one of its four legs. All of the surrounding buildings and vegetation around the base of the lighthouse were washed out to sea.
I’ve lived nearby Sanibel for over 40 years, and I have captured the iconic lighthouse from many angles. Recently, I realized I had taken no pictures of the lighthouse since Hurricane Ian. This image of the newly restored lighthouse, with a very different surrounding landscape, was captured this summer during the evening golden hour.
