It was my third week of exploring Iceland during the midnight sun, and after days of traveling and getting very little sleep, I was exhausted. After several hours on the road, I finally reached my accommodation in the evening. The plan was simple: get some rest and wake up early the next morning to look for Arctic foxes.
But instead of staying in, I decided to go out and explore the area around sunset.
I ended up at the tip of a remote peninsula on Iceland’s northern coast, far from the country’s main tourist routes. There, along a steep sea cliff, I discovered a large colony of seabirds, including Razorbills. I spent the evening watching them against an incredible sunset, completely alone.
What made the experience particularly special was being able to observe the birds behaving naturally, without getting too close or disturbing them. There were no crowds, no marked trails, just the sound of the sea, the birds, and the midnight sun.
It became one of my favorite evenings of nearly four weeks in Iceland — and one I almost missed. The place had not even been part of my original plan, but it is somewhere I will return to someday.
