A couple of years ago, I organized a photo trip with friends in the beautiful Scottish Highlands. We spent one week in the Glencoe region and a second on the Isle of Skye. The Highlands are truly a photographer’s paradise. To plan the trip, I relied mainly on The Landscape Photographer’s Guide for both regions, having bought the ebooks on LPM website.
During our week on the Isle of Skye, we headed one day to the Cuillin Hills near Glenbrittle. At this location, I was struck by the scenery: beautifully colored fields, distant hills covered by amazing clouds, and no visual distraction! As I always say, the Scottish Highlands are a photographer’s paradise!
Handheld, I composed the image to include the little ditch on the left side and the road on the right side, both heading to the beautiful distant hills. I reserved the upper third for the sky. Consequently, I framed the scene at 34 mm.
I also considered the scene’s dynamic range. I was afraid of not being able to seize the full dynamic range, so I did not take a chance! I set the camera to capture three bracketed exposures with two-stop intervals. Later, I merged the files in Lightroom to produce a single HDR file.
We came back from this trip with many amazing photographs. After that trip, each time I met my friends they always asked me, “When will we go back to Paradise?”
