This image was taken at sunrise in Thunder Hole at Acadia National Park on New Year’s Eve. The rock, fractured and layered in a way the sky cannot be, holds still while the sun performs its awaited arrival, a single coal set on the crest of the tide.
I was drawn less to the spectacle of sunrise than to what it touched on its way up — the way the rocky cove briefly wears the orange color it will momentarily forget. This particular spot in the park is known for its violent waves crashing among the rocks, but I was content with the ocean being calm this morning. It reflected my emotions while capturing the moment, as the typically crowded park was empty on this last day of the year and my feelings were as serene as the sea and sunrise.
