This photo was taken in Almograve, one of the many wonderful beaches that are part of the Southwest Alentejo and Vicentina Coast Natural Park in Portugal. This is still a well-preserved stretch of coast that starts in Sines and goes all the way to Lagos. Despite the ongoing pressures from increased tourism and associated development, it is still possible to enjoy the natural beauty and peacefulness of its beaches, estuaries, and rural landscapes.

I have known this beach for 50 years and have been photographing in the park for maybe 30 years, so I am quite familiar with the best locations. The locals say that the sunset from Almograve is unique, and I have to agree. Especially in winter (this photo was taken in late December), the sunset is around 5:30 p.m., and the low-angle light illuminates the beach with warm tones.

I wanted to frame the two rocks in the foreground against the setting sun and the rosy clouds. The air was crisp and cool, adding great visibility to this location. I had to watch out for the incoming waves, though, keeping an eye on them to avoid unwanted water at my feet. Timing the incoming waves, I took a few test shots using my Fuji X-E5 camera and Voigtlander 27mm lens, which is my favorite lightweight travel and trekking combination. I waited until the sun touched the horizon and took the shot. The result was a photo I am very happy with because it includes both cool blue and warm golden tones.
