Spring In The Oregon Coast Range, Siuslaw National Forest, Oregon, USA

This is a favorite spot of mine in the Oregon Coast Range. I visit it in all seasons, but springtime is definitely my favorite. The little stream flows gently down the mountainside through huge, old Douglas fir and hemlock trees. It cascades over moss-covered rocks and around old, fallen logs. In the spring, with the new growth of oxalis and ferns, the various shades of green are a feast for the eyes.

This photo was taken in mid-June, three years ago. It’s a three-photo stack because I wanted the oxalis in the foreground to be in focus.

This image is special to me because, on a recent trip in late May, there were signs that a logging operation had started in the area. I haven’t been back since and fear that this spot may now be a “forest” of stumps. Over the past 48 years that I have lived in Oregon, so many gorgeous forests have been cleared. I try to brace myself for it, but it never gets any easier.
