The colour and shape of the Sossusvlei dunes are visually arresting: the colour determined by the light and the iron-oxide coating of the sand grains, the shape by pronounced daily and seasonal changes in dominant wind directions.
It’s something of a cliché to write of sculpted sand, but I couldn’t forget the adjective; it seemed to fit perfectly what I saw before me. Even the slipping away of a sand face, at the bottom right of the shot (presumably the action of gravity rather than wind), reminded me of the texture of a potter’s cut in a piece of clay.
The shot wasn’t a feat of endurance, nor did it call for any special technique. I merely framed it and must let nature take the bulk of the credit for the result.
