This image was taken in Damaraland, which we visited with the express wish to see the desert-adapted elephants. Normally, these would be found around 1 hour or so from our base. On this occasion, they were much further afield, and so we had a long desert trek to locate them in a dried-up riverbed.
The trail was about 4 hours, and during this period we saw different types of desert terrain—very sandy, rocky, and gravelly. This shot shows the land at its most desiccated, with the mountains providing further interest. Many setups lacked interest, but I felt that this image gave both a sense of space and location, leaving one to wonder how anything survives in such places.
