Desert Sun Shade, Dune 45, Namib-Naukluft National Park, Namibia

There isn’t a lot of relief from the desert sun near Dune Number 45, and latterly I was very grateful for this natural parasol providing much-needed shade.

The early morning light turned the iron-rich sand dunes orange, with occasional gusts of hot desert wind blowing plumes of sand off the dune summit, framed against an electric blue sky. I loved the effect of the red desert sand finding its way into the root system of the tree.

Closer inspection revealed these as channels, looking for all the world like blood vessels aiding the tree’s survival and nourishment in these exceedingly harsh conditions.
