Lone Monument, Monument Valley, Arizona, USA

On my way home from a cross-country RV trip, I took a day to go through Monument Valley in the Navajo Nation, in Utah and Arizona. It was a dark and drizzly day, unusual in the desert but making for dramatic photos.

I was stopping every chance I could to see what I could from the next viewpoint. And at one scenic pullout in Utah, looking south, I saw this butte that’s actually in Arizona. With the clouds and lighting, I knew I had to capture this dramatic scene.

It did take a little post-processing in Lightroom to get the values exactly right, but I think the result is quite striking.

And it has inspired me to return to Monument Valley for a few days and give it a real in-depth photo study.

Nikon Coolpix P950, shooting RAW at f/2.9, 1/160 sec, ISO 100, and pulled one stop. Highlights and shadows adjusted in Lightroom.
