What a beautiful landscape in the Antelope Canyons—Upper and Lower! Occasionally, the most compelling view is not directly ahead but above or below, as was the case with this photograph. Due to restrictions on flash use within the canyons, I lay on my back and captured the image looking upward, shooting handheld.
During winter, the canyons typically do not receive the characteristic warm light. Because this image was taken in December, the sun didn’t pass directly overhead, resulting in cooler blue and purple tones throughout the scene. The final photograph was significantly cropped at the top and bottom and inverted. I felt this approach would direct the viewer’s attention toward the center, evoking a mountain range and reflecting the theme suggested by the title, ‘Purple Mountains’.
