At 5,298 ft (1,615 m), Tipsoo Lake is an alpine lake on the eastern edge of Mt. Rainier National Park in Washington State. It is covered with snow for most of the year, but when it finally becomes free of snow and ice in the summer, the area offers spectacular views of 14,410 ft (4,390 m) Mt. Rainier, with reflections in the lake itself. Actually, there are two lakes at this location, upper and lower, separated by State Route 410 on its way out of the park to the town of Yakima in the flatlands to the east.
This image was made at the edge of the upper, smaller lake on a perfect summer evening. The mild weather that evening belied a storm system moving in, which brought clouds and light rain the next morning.
