European Beach Grass, Obidos, Leiria, Portugal

Primary dunes are particularly sensitive to spoilage and degradation, as the vegetation is only herbaceous, and the sand is a substrate easily transported by the wind. The European beach-grass is the most important perennial herbaceous plant for fixing sand and maintaining primary dunes.

Last summer, when visiting Óbidos lagoon, I was marvelled by a dune where European beach-grass was very abundant and grew well. The sun was shining on the grass. The sky was beautifully blue with scanty clouds. The use of monochromatic infrared-photography that converts the blues of the sky into dark greys, and the greens of the plants into whitish tones, intensified the beauty and drama of the scenario. Using a small lens aperture, I got all the planes focused. It was wild nature at its best.
