Dead Horse Point, located on a mesa across the Colorado River from the Islands in the Sky section of Canyonlands National Park in southeast Utah, is a small isthmus on the mesa, two thousand feet above the river.
The narrow neck of the isthmus is easily blocked with trees and brush, and was used by cowboys to trap wild horses on the point. According to legend, a herd of horses was trapped on the point and, unable to reach the Colorado River far below, died of thirst. Whether the legend is true is debated.
In any event, Dead Horse Point is now part of a state park by the same name. It offers fantastic views of the Colorado River Canyon, carved by the river over millions of years.
I visited there in early 2025 and came away with this and many other images.
