In August 2018, we embarked on a journey to Peru and Bolivia as part of an organized tour. One day, our guide led us to an extraordinary citadel nestled within a breathtaking landscape where the Peruvian Andes meet the Amazon Basin. This remarkable site is situated at an elevation of 2,400 meters above sea level.

Upon our arrival at the citadel, I found myself pondering, “How can I possibly capture this incredible scene? I have no desire to photograph mere stone walls!”

I noticed the upper levels devoid of any structures. Curious, I asked our guide, “Is it possible for me to access the upper level?” He responded, “There’s nothing of interest up there!” I insisted, “My camera yearns to capture the entire panorama!” He chuckled at my enthusiasm. Eventually, he informed me that I could indeed go, but there was a steep trail with numerous steps leading to the upper level — no elevator in sight!

I was thrilled with my choice to ascend to this vantage point. From here, we enjoyed an unobstructed view of the citadel, the majestic mountain peak in the background, the billowing clouds, and the steep hillside to the left.

Using a handheld camera, I carefully composed and framed the scene with a 16 mm focal length. My GPS indicated that I was at an altitude of 2,540 meters above sea level.

Reflecting on the outcome, I felt a deep sense of satisfaction with my decision to seek out this optimal viewpoint.
