Kikarin, an egg-shaped rock formation on the island of Suduroy in the Faroe Islands, captivated my wife and me during our October visit. We chose this time to avoid the peak tourist season and to enjoy the extended golden hours of the season. I planned our visit to the viewpoint on Suduroy for mid-morning, ensuring the sun would be shining directly down the coast, still low on the horizon, backlighting the stunning scene before us.

As we approached the viewpoint at the cliff’s edge, an extremely strong wind tried to push us off balance. Fortunately, there was a small viewing platform with a railing, which helped alleviate my fear of heights as the wind buffeted me. I held onto my camera tripod to keep it steady and took a series of manually bracketed exposures, focusing on the highlights. During processing, I brightened the underexposed foreground.
