In June 2025, I spent three wonderful weeks with friends in Newfoundland, capturing its natural beauty, including whales, birds, icebergs, and stunning landscapes. One particular day, we planned to photograph an iceberg at sunset. According to reports, there was an iceberg located in Gillard’s Cove, although the weather forecast predicted clouds during sunset. The big question was: “Shall we go?”

In my mind, I imagined that even if the sun didn’t set in a clear view, we would still find a majestic white iceberg in a beautifully colored environment.

One and a half hours before sunset, I arrived at the shoreline of Gillard’s Cove. This 10,000-year-old glacial giant stood alone in the area. I set up my tripod and camera with a cable release, planning to perform a long exposure to smooth out the water ripples and enhance the reflection on the surface.

Throughout our trip, we learned that it can be dangerous to do long exposures with icebergs, as they tend to drift slowly. For my comfort, I decided to limit my exposure to 10 seconds. I framed my shot using a 56mm focal length and set the aperture to F/18. By overexposing by two stops, I achieved the desired 10-second exposure. Finally, I triggered the shutter.

It was a breathtaking moment in nature.
