This photo was taken during my visit to Jebel Sarra in Oman. I am part of an astronomy group that regularly organises trips to dark sites, which usually means going to isolated locations in the mountains to avoid light pollution from major cities and villages. Compared to 20 years ago, when I first lived in Oman, finding dark sites has become increasingly difficult.

Jebel Sarra is a great location because it remains dark at night and is situated at nearly 2,600 meters above sea level, making it an ideal spot to escape the high summer temperatures that prevail in the rest of the country. Located west of Jebel Shams, this area is accessible via a gravel road with steep inclines, so a 4-wheel-drive vehicle is required.

We set up camp in a small valley surrounded by hills and a forest of juniper trees and other smaller vegetation. The abundant greenery makes it a pleasant camping spot. Before sunset, I took a stroll to find interesting photographic opportunities, particularly featuring the large juniper trees or the smaller bushes. As the sun set in the west, I stumbled upon a lonely tree framed against a backdrop of moody clouds. When the sun broke through the cloud cover, it created a shaft of light that added a perfect extra element to the composition. I was ready to click the shutter and capture this moment. I always shoot in RAW format, which is vital given the high contrast in the image between the shadows and highlights.
