On a night in October 2025, I consulted my weather application to ascertain the expected conditions for sunrise the following day. Probable forecasts indicated sunny weather and freezing temperatures.

In September, using the Photographers Ephemeris App, I determined that the’ Plage de l’Est” location was an ideal vantage point for capturing the sunrise. Please refer to:

Subsequently, I re-checked the application to confirm the continued suitability of this site for the upcoming day.

At this time of year, the St. Lawrence River remains unfrozen. Given the exceptionally cold weather, I was highly confident that fog would be present at this location.

The following morning, fifteen minutes prior to sunrise, I set up my tripod and camera, equipped with my preferred Leica DG wide-angle lens, known for creating star effects at minimal apertures (f/22). I composed the shot utilising a 16 mm focal length and set the aperture to f/22.

To capture the full dynamic range of the scene, I programmed the camera to take three exposures, each with a two-stop difference, anticipating that these images could be processed into an HDR photograph via Lightroom.

As the sun rose above the distant trees, I activated the shutter.

As anticipated, the star effects introduced dynamism to the scene. I was particularly impressed by the reflections of the small stars on the gentle waves.

Once again, meticulous planning and familiarity with the equipment proved essential photographic elements.

For me, it is important to have preferred photographic locations within close proximity to my residence. Residing in a large city, I am fortunate to be able to reach this site in less than twenty minutes.
