In October 2024, I spent a wonderful week in the Charlevoix region with friends, all eager to capture the autumn beauty with our cameras. One morning, I was amazed to see a thick layer of fog that looked like a massive low cloud resting on the ground.
From my experience, being at a higher altitude provides the best perspective of the scenery when fog is present. I drove along a small road atop a hill, parked my car on the side, and walked a few meters to take in the view. I was captivated by the layers in the landscape: the yellow trees, the slender trunks, the distant mountains, the massive clouds, and the valleys trapped in the fog.
I took out my camera, held it steady, and composed my shot using a 100 mm focal length and an aperture of f/16. To achieve perfect exposure by “exposing to the right” (ETTR), I intentionally overexposed the scene by 1.7 stops.
Looking ahead, I realized that the fog was concealing nature’s beauty. If the view was so stunning from above, I could only imagine how breathtaking it would be in the valleys below. It was a clear invitation to explore the marvelous Charlevoix region.
