Temperance River Under Fog, Temperance River State Park, Minnesota, USA

I spent a weekend with my significant other along the North Shore of Minnesota, where the weather was quite foggy. A cold front had moved in along Lake Superior, creating a moody atmosphere. As we stopped at various locations, I had the idea to visit Temperance River State Park. This is where the mouth of the Temperance River meets Lake Superior, and it was a marvelous sight.

We had the location to ourselves, soaking in the scenery. I started taking some photos, but they didn’t turn out as I had hoped. I was looking for something more unique, rather than the typical image and composition.

As the rain began to fall and I realized I didn’t have a cover for my camera, I decided to seek shelter under the walkway. There, I noticed a well that I had never really paid attention to before. Today, it perfectly fits the theme of the image I envisioned. The fog rolled in more heavily off the lake, and the rain made the surfaces around me glisten. It was exactly what I needed to create a unique photo from this location. I composed the shot using a LEE Big Stopper to capture the long exposure motion of nature passing by.

After capturing this moody scene, I noticed people starting to walk above the walkway where I was sheltered, so I decided to head back to my car. My significant other was waiting for me and was excited to see what I had captured. She was blown away by the image and appreciated how I view things from a different perspective.

Over the years, I’ve learned that even in less-than-ideal weather conditions, being patient and trusting the process in photography can lead to rewarding results.
