Abraham Lake Burn Off, Alberta, Canada

Abraham Lake, like most others in this part of Alberta, Canada, appear to the naked eye as a beautiful shade of teal. This is due to the suspended glacial silt and how it refracts the blue and green light. However, Abraham Lake has a unique characteristic to others in the area, a partially submerged stand of Aspen trees, which makes for a beautiful fall photo.

On this particular fall morning, while waiting for the light to get to how I wanted for the submerged aspen scene, the sun had crested the mountains behind me, causing the upper air to warm and the heavier, leftover cold night air to sink. When that cold air came into contact with the warmer lake waters, a surface mist formed.

I turned my camera around and was greeted with a warmly backlit scene. The last remaining aspen leaves are clinging on for a few more days. The early morning breeze, just enough to cause some movement of the mist, brings the scene to life.

What an idyllic morning this was. Just me, nature and my camera on this crisp, Canadian fall morning and my luck of being there to capture and share my vision.
