This photograph was taken at midnight in Northern Finland near the Arctic Circle, where the sun never sets for a couple of weeks in summer. That time was practically over when I visited this lake in July, but due to the long twilight, it is not dark at night even this time of the summer. This provides distinctive but also a bit challenging lighting conditions for photography.
When standing on the shoreline of this small lake, I was surrounded by complete silence. The weather was calm, and there were no mosquitoes. The only bird sound was the occasional call of the Black-throated Diver. Nothing else was heard.
Some mist wandered slowly along the surface of the blue lake bordered with a forest and mires. It is a typical phenomenon in calm weather over moist environments at night or very early morning. It offers an interesting and quickly changing element for photographers who will hit the right conditions.
I spent a good while there admiring the beautiful scenery. The depth of the blue colour was astonishing. Northern summer nights spent alone in nature can leave indelible impressions.
